Compassion House Foundation has been supporting women from Central and Northern Alberta on their cancer journey since 2002. Relying on committed donors, keen volunteers and skilled staff, the Foundation has served over 1,300 guests from 250 communities. In addition, the Foundation has completed two successful capital campaigns and hosts on one of the premier annual fundraising events in Edmonton, Fashion with Compassion. The Foundation is seeking a skilled and experienced fund development professional to take a leadership role with the organization in order to expand programs and elevate the sights of the Foundation’s supporters.


The Director of Philanthropy will report to the Executive Director and work closely with the Board of Directors to secure the philanthropic support necessary to grow the essential programs and facilities of the Foundation.

Position Summary

The Director of Philanthropy will effectively create and implement strategies to increase donor engagement in the work of the Foundation. Building on the current levels of support, this person will work with the Compassion House Foundation Board and sub-committee to identify donors and determine the most effective cultivation, solicitation and stewardship requirements of donors. Reporting to the Executive Director, the successful candidate will establish long-term relationships with donors, private-sector influencers, corporations, foundations and volunteers in the community to build new partnerships and opportunities.


Key Responsibilities

o   Lead prospect research, prospect clearance and donor relationship management and maintain high quality, up-to-date, accurate and respectful donor records

o   Coordinate and deliver the annual Fashion with Compassion event by utilizing and supporting the activities of the volunteer leadership and additional event support

o   Delivering on specific revenue targets related to a group of constituents assigned to the role

o   Coordinating and submitting grant applications; tracking outcomes and reporting back to granting agencies on the impact of their support

o   Refine and implement the donor stewardship matrix in recognition of donor contributions; assist with timely follow-up calling, mailings, reporting and other activities related to building strong donor relationships

o   Support the development and delivery of a planned giving program

o   Record guest stories/experiences and communicate outcomes to Foundation stakeholders

o   Make presentations and offer tours on behalf of Compassion House Foundation & Sorrentino’s Compassion House

Special Event Management – Leadership role for special event management. This includes Fashion with Compassion and third party fundraisers within and outside of Edmonton. Enhance the cache and calibre of Fashion with Compassion. Enlist and support volunteers conducting third party events. Represent the Foundation at such events as necessary. Supervise event staff and contract support.

Communications - Develop and produce development materials, including the case support, planned giving materials, donor communications, and content for social media and other vehicles of communication.

Database - Manage and maintain the donor database of the Foundation including the recording and input of all donations received, regular review of the status of activity of donors with the database; security of information; providing timely reports to the Board as requested. Supervise part time database staff.

  • Must enjoy meeting new people and building relationships
  • Be detail oriented and able to work with little supervision and in cooperation with the Executive Director, volunteer committees and the Board
  • Ability to multi-task, be proactive and set priorities with a sense of urgency
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Interact effectively with all levels of employees, volunteers, donors and prospects.
  • Exceptional application of Microsoft Office. Broad experience with technology and social media. Experience with Raiser’s Edge or similar donor database management system is essential
  • Keen understanding of budgeting processes and data management
  • Solid knowledge of ethical principles and best practices of fundraising, donor relations and communications; an AFP membership is an asset
  • An understanding of social media and how it integrates into the overall communication strategy would be an asset
  • Post secondary education in a related field
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a non-profit environment, including experience in working directly with donors
  • Knowledge of Canada Revenue Agency, Federal and Provincial laws as they pertain to charitable workValid driver’s license

The Director of Philanthropy will be located in Edmonton, Alberta and is a full-time position (37.5 hours/week); salary to commensurate with experience
