Position Title:  Project Coordinator, Community Capacity Building Partnership

Reports to: Steering Committee comprises of AHC, EMCN and City of Edmonton EIRC Grants Program


Project Background

Action for Healthy Communities (AHC), Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (EMCN) and the City of Edmonton Grants department currently provide capacity building support to immigrant, refugee and indigenous community organizations/groups. The three partners recently developed a partnership to collaboratively launch a one-year pilot project for the community capacity building. The target demographic for the Pilot Project are organizations or groups from immigrant, refugee, or indigenous communities who may be new to operating a not for profit organization, new to project planning, have a limited network of connections to resources including financial resources, and who are working with their community members towards positive change.

Through a collaborative discovery process with the community, this pilot seeks to:

  • Identify and /or improve current approaches to capacity building to best support community organizations in their work.
  • Make recommendations for policy or changes to practice to address barriers and/or limitations identified by the partner organizations.

Position overview

This is a 12 month, part-time (24 hours per week) contract position based at Action for Healthy Communities and EMCN working with community groups supported by all three partners for their capacity building.

Role and Responsibilities

As a key member and support to the Steering Committee you will be responsible to:

  • Work collaboratively with partner organizations to develop a common assessment tool to identify areas of support for participating community groups.
  • Organize and deliver meetings for up to 15 participating community organizations/groups including but not limited to orientation to the pilot project and evaluation focus groups.
  • Work with partners to identify resources for participating community organizations.
  • Assist evaluators in the collection of evaluation data.
  • Assist with report writing.
  • Attend meetings and provide administrative support to Steering Committee (minute taking, etc.).

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree in Social Work, Community Development, Education, Human Ecology, Social Sciences, Human Services or a related field.
  • Experience facilitating and working with diverse communities, including Indigenous, immigrant, and refugee groups.
  • Experience working in the non-for-profit sector and knowledge of non-for-profit board governance.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of community development principles and practice.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Computer skills: proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and database systems.
  • Ability to collaborate, learn quickly, think logically, and understand complex relationships
  • Proven time management and organization skills.
  •  Ability to take initiative, multitask and maintain confidentiality.
  • Experience working as part of a partnership or collaboration will be an asset.
  • Police Information Check including vulnerable sector search and Intervention Record Check are conditions of employment and the financial responsibility of the candidate.

 

 Time Commitment and Other Requirements

  • 24 hours/week
  • Some evening and weekend work will be required.
  • The successful candidate must obtain a criminal record check. Must have a valid class 5 driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle.

Compensation

The salary range is between $24-26 per hour based on qualifications and experience along with a comprehensive health benefits package.
