I volunteer with the Learning and Literacy Centre. I’ve been doing it for two years now, and work with a man who wanted to work on his literacy. We work on reading and comprehension skills. I have always enjoyed giving back to my community, but as a student, it’s more feasible to give my time as opposed to financial contributions. I likely wouldn’t have met many of the people I have without volunteering. Volunteerism helps strengthen communities, and when communities grow stronger, the country as a whole benefits. It also provides insight and perspective – learning about newcomers and the challenges they face is quite humbling.
