If you are considering applying for status as a registered charity in Canada you will want to read a series of blog posts from Mark Blumberg, a partner in the law firm of Blumberg Segal LLP in Toronto. He works almost exclusively in the areas of non-profit and charity law.
In “What is the chance of your Canadian charity application succeeding?” Blumberg highlights that of the 3810 charity applications received by the Charities Directorate of CRA in 2015-2016, only 1670 (43%) were approved. Why? It is not because organizations are bad – it’s because all the criteria for a registered charity must be met before receiving approval.
